wifi to serial via http

Postby Reiniertc » Fri Jul 27, 2012 9:14 am

I've got a samsung TV and a denon receiver, both able to receive serial commands.
I'd like to be able to control them in Homeseer, so I want to send serial commands.
Since they are too far away from my homeseer server, I need another solution to transfer the serial commands than using a simple cable.
I found a wifi-to-serial device, in combination with a virtual com port on the server. That should work.
But I would really want, is a wifi-to-serial device with some sort of build in web server that you can send commands to
(like: http://192.168.1.33/command.cgi&com1&set011010100 ) or so.
That way I don't need a virtual com port.
Dows anyone know if such capabilities exist?

IRtrans WLAN version seems a far easier solution to your problem as there are readily available plugins available. However not all devices allow two-way communication over IR, but judging from your post that is not a requirement.

Also, this way you can control many more devices.

A cheaper alternative to the IRtrans is the IRblaster, these are sold in combination with iPhone apps.

If your are looking for a sturdy WLAN device server, Moxa NPort (W2150A/W2250A) is used quit a lot in building automation. However you will have to dive in to the documentation yourself to see if your HTTP setup would be possible and if it allows for feedback (two-way communication) over HTTP. Also you will then be limited to the amount of serial ports available on the device server.

Thanks for your quick reply.
IR_Trans is not an option: I have no place to hode the IR-trans device.
Since I have a rs232 port on my receiver, I prefer a direct way of transferring the commands.
The Moxa device is exactly what I mean, but it can only operate via a virtual com port on the homeseer server.
Too bad: if it would accept HTTP-commands, it would be way easier for me to script the device in Homeseer.

But: the moxa is on my list (unless someone knows of a simular device that accepts/translates http-commands

actually: the irtrans wifi was the best solution!
I now have the wifi version with database and rs232 port: it works just like what I was looking for...
