How easy is it to control RFXCOM products from linux?

Postby icepick » Tue Jan 31, 2012 7:35 am

Hi,
Does anyone know how easy it is to controle the RFXCOM products from linux? I am talking writing your own scripts etc? And is the USB version any easier than the lan version or is it kind of the same? I noticed the LAN version is more expensive than separate receiver/transmitter USB modules.. are they besides the connection identical?

I run my whole house automation system on 1 Siemen-Fujitsu Futro S400 (an old embedded windows based terminal) now flashed with ubuntu 10... it has USB ports so I guess USB would costwise be preferable..

The protocols to/from the USB and the TCP/IP LAN version are identical.
The LAN version can also be flashed with xPL firmware. The xPL protocol is Open Source and the RFXCOM implementation is available at: www.rfxcom.com/downloads

Both, USB and LAN are supported by DomotiGa www.domotiga.nl

It's very easy. I've been using a USB RFXCOM receiver for years now with no problems at all. I use it for all my RF. You talk to the USB version through the Linux USB <-> serial driver (ftdi_sio.ko)
RFXCOM supply all the documentation you need and the technical support is of course excellent!

There's a Linux area on this forum and though I've not tried it, DomotiGa (again on this forum) looks good.

Steve,
Great! Thats what I wanted to hear.. :)
I am bit unsure which transmitter to order.. the 433 mhz one or the 433 mhz with the extra text saying "This RFXmitter can only be used by the Homeseer RFXCOM plug-in, Girder or xPL!". It seems like these units both support different protocols. And do I still need to order the EUR 23,80 transmitter module? Or is that already included in the unit? I want to control the Elro AB400 units..

This unit is equiped with the RFXmitter module.

The RFXtrx433 has been announced.
This transceiver has a much simpler interface. For programmers the free SDK is available on request.
