Here's an overview of the additional hardware i bought to make working with Digi XBee modules a bit more convenient:

2. USB TTL-232 cable - TTL-232R 3.3V from http://www.adafruit.com:
This cable can be used to connect the adapter kit (item 1) to your PC.
