Camera for night surveillance

Post by kris2lee »

Hello,

I have been a long time reader of this forum but current urgent situation requires me to also ask something.

I'm looking for a solution that would allow me to identify a face from about 20 meters at night. Area is illuminated by regular streat lights.

Actual surveilled area is about 2x2 meters but I also may need to spot the face before moving into this area (I.e. camera must see at the same time when it is spoted).

This is a temporary solution for one specific need.

This should be a IP camera because this looks like a only option to connect to the camera (I can not drill holes and there is a outlet outside that I can use for ethernet over power).

I welcome all the opinions and thank you in advance.

That will not be possible using a standard TV resolution camera: If your viewing plane at 20 meters from the lens is 2 meters high, it will be 2.66 meters wide (3:4 ratio). This will require a lens with a 7.5 degree opening angle. A modern zoom lens can do that, but not with the resolution you require. If your cameara and lens produce full D1 resolution (which the won't), the image will still only be 576x768 pixels covering your 2x2.66 meter plane. That is only 2.88 pixels per cm and with a life cameara and lens it will be (a lot) worse, especially under low-light conditions.

You may want to look into a high resolution camara. I haven't seen one with a high power zoom lens yet, but you never know. And low light conditions can be compenstated using infra red illumination.

No drill holes means that you can not place a (30euros) lamp triggered by IR sensors? you could save some money on the cam with good lights......

I try to be more specific.

The issue is that somebody is attacking our car and I want to identify this person (to make sure that this is or is not somebody who I know - meaning that is it a personal attack or this is some lunatic in action).

Only place where I can watch the car is a parking place behind the house that is about 20 meters from the house.

We have a terrace that is narrowed by two walls (so in fact it is more like a balcony). There is a electrical outlet in the terrace so I can use the electricity there.

Now I'm thinking that maybe having a camera in the visible place is not a good idea at all (because when this is some stranger, our living place can be easily located because of the camera).

This means that I have to put the camera inside. This will limit the angle of visibility but means also that camera is practically not visible and attacker must know where our windows are to not look at them.

I'm not willing to spend more than about 450 euro unless really nessesary.

To avoid questions, I have to say that local police is not really willing to help here.

450 euros is too low for what you really need, an high resolution cam with zoom (the one you need) costs 1500 euros ! why don't you place an IR (360 degrees) sensor in the car that triggers 4 pin hole cams in the 4 layers of the car itself? (total is just 200-300 euros)

idea to place camera's in your car? don't know how much power you will need (considering the battery power).

That was actually my first thought. But the problem is (in my mind) that this is really specific solution.

Besides I'm not sure that it is duable to put the cameras so that it would be possible to see the attackers face when attacker is near to the car and I'm actually not be able to verify that the car is attacked at that moment.

If possible just get the ir sensor in there that sends a signal to your house. Then make sure you have a camera which is zoomed in on the car (dont know if you can buy a simple cam with a lens on it) then it starts recording. Saves diskspace too, and it allows for higher quality pictures (otherwise you need too much disk space)

IF YOU HAVE RFXCOM, and use homeseer you can set something with blade radar plugin, that creates zones that are triggered by heat (people) . you place ms13 in the car, this creates an event that sends warning (sound, sms, what you want....) you can check immediatly with a night-visor (like DeltaForce :) ) http://cgi.ebay.it/VISORE-NOTTURNO-INFR ... 3a54b78169 , who is that ^bad guy !
