New Mac Mini Server 2011 for Bwired
New Mac Mini Server 2011 for Bwired
The new mac mini server 2011 is there, and yes what I hoped for is in it
http://www.apple.com/nl/macmini/server/
The new Mac Mini has Got Sata3 6Gb/s HD Controller
It has a 2,0-GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 with 6 MB shared L3-cache
Intel HD Graphics 3000-processor met 384 MB DDR3 SDRAM,
8GB internal memory
2x Kingston HyperX SSD Sata3 SSD drives Capable of 555/510MB/s read write.
http://www.kingston.com/ukroot/ssd/hyperx.asp
I still need to migrate the old Mac Mini to the new one.
Get back with the results soon!
I have 3 Mac Mini's now so 1 mac mini server (2010) is for sale, its the backup one (with Corsair P128 SSD), so not used!

Re: New Mac Mini Server 2011 for Bwired
wow, I am very curious what the power consumption will be and what you are going to put on it.
Expensive set and I don't hear you talk about the thunderbold option what was the reason to upgrade?
Still find it strange that they call it a server but it has only one eth. connector...
Other than the software that runs on any Mac, no redundancy, no expansion options etc I am still puzzled why it is an attractive package for more than a thousand euro's.

Re: New Mac Mini Server 2011 for Bwired
Actually there is not a very good reason to upgrade, my current Mac Mini is running very fast and low on power.
This 2010 Mac Mini controls my Home automation, runs Bwired.nl and Im working on it, all very fast.
Reason for me is the Sata3, I like very fast drives and i'm very ancious about the extra IO performance.
I already seen some reviews on internet and Idle is this mac still running >15 watt, on heavy duty in can go up to 45 watt.
I use only USB on the mini, which is still on 2.0?
and I use MiniDisplay port to dualDVI to get the 2560x1600 resolution
Of course Mac os will be removed and W2K8 server installed, not sure now if I run it native or use something like parallels.
Probably i will be facing a lot of new problems, is Sata3 recognized when I run Windows 2008 native, can i put the the 2 SSD drives in raid......

Yea, nice toy and of course fun to play with and adjust it. I have been looking at it and also want to run WSRV2008R2 on it. But need to add diskspace and then I am stuck with thunderbold options. Not much choice and way overpriced still.
May be I'll stay a step behind you and take your 2010 .
Have fun and post the progress please.

Just received the Mac as we speaked, I hooked it up directly
In Idle mode still only 13 watt, how do they do it!
This is with the 2 original 2.5, 7200rpm drives, which I will replace with the Kingston hyperX SSD.

Question about the SSD drive overall, normal is this kind of drive have a max off reading and writing actions (is see numbers of 1.000.000 times).
Now i want to know for normal use how long can you use a ssd drive before you getting problem?

Don't worry about SSD lifetime anymore. It is more years than you will keep it unless you write the whole disk full and empty everyday...
I have them running in many computers at home and also in servers in the Datacenter. Never any hickup and the specs keep getting better.
If you are worried about the life time you can always spend double money on enterprise SSD disks
