Ethernet based video door bell

Postby Pegasus01 » Wed Aug 28, 2013 1:36 pm

Hi all,

Could some one tell me if something out there could fit the following requirement?

I want to operate my main gate which is 70m away from my house with the use of a video door bell system. Wireless is out of the question as I don't have line of sight and adding the thickness of house walls, the signal is going to be too noisy.
I do however have a CAT6e (shielded) 4 pair cable running from the gate post to the house where I am fully CAT5e and RJ45 equipped. I also have 220V at the gate.
I've been trying to find a video door bell with camera and stand alone monitors that could be connected to each other via the CAT5e and CAT6e cables and maybe a hub and with or without PoE but I just can't get my hands on anything like that.
Anyone have an idea where I could get this for a reasonnable price?

Many thanks,

Nick

Does it need to be an Ethernet version?
IE: You can easily feed a video signal over the CAT5/6

Hi Noel,

Doesn't need to be any particular signal. All I would like is to be able to use the CAT6e cable for signal feed (audio 2 way, video one way and gate opening toggle). My worry is signal loss over the 70 odd meters between camera and monitor if I don't use Ethernet version. But maybe that's not an issue...?

The best system is probably the Mobotix, but quite pricey with starting price of EUR800,-

mobotix.com/dut_NL/Producten/Gebouwente ... tercom-T24

Or you can buy direct from China various options. On Aliexpress for example:

aliexpress.com/wholesale?SearchText=ip+ ... 0828092338

Hi Olof,

Thanks for the links. Mobotix look really neat but expensive and a little too complex for my liking. The chinese stuff looks good but is it as good in reality? Seems there is very little feedback from purchasers. Do you have experience with buying through Aliexpress?
This one looks like exactly what I was looking for:

Any advice?

Hi Nick,

I have bought on Alixpress before, no problems. It is just like Ebay. Trustworthiness is also like Ebay, it can differ between different sellers.

Your selected product, I could not find any tech. specs. I would ask for them with the seller. As soon as you have them, go to the forum at
http://www.networkcamerareviews.com and ask them if those camera specs are ok. People at that forum really know their IP camera stuff.
Things like low light performance, facial recognition, extreme temperatures, waterproof are important. Many cheap IP camera's for outdoors are toys.

Hi guys,

Timo, thanks for the tip. Had a look at their products but its a little over my budget.

Olof, thanks for the info. I'll contact the Aliexpress seller and do what you said. Thanks for the advice!

Hi Olof,

Thanks for the link. I had seen this before and seems nice but I don't know if I wanna be a Guinea Pig on that product. Especially with something not even out and at $200...
I think I'm gonna end up buying from Aliexpress... Will come back to give a review when I get it.

I think any cam with external input contact would do fine

- Connect the doorbell button to the remote input of the camera (or motion sensor or anything that can close a contact)
- Let the camera send you an email with the picture of the doorbell press

I have build this setup in the past with a Mobotix M10 the doorbell button was connected to an input and when the doorbell was pressed the camera made an ISDN call to an extension for speech (intercom). The camera also made an TCP notify to an VisualBasis application which pops up and opened the camera image on the webrowser.

Although the Mobotix camera looks expensive it is actually not that expensive when you take al the options in account (waterproof, POE, ISDN, Night/Day vision, Intercom)

Note: from time2time these device pop up on Marktplaats

When still out of budget try one of these http://www.mymediacenter.nl/assortiment ... 325hd.html or http://www.mymediacenter.nl/assortiment ... ieuw-.html

I don't know if you're still looking for a video door bell, but the IP video door phone developed by NovSIP must be a good solution for you.
It's powered in PoE and connected to your smartphone or tablet. You can go on the website for more information :)

Hi SoChabran,

Could you post a link to the IP phone from NovSIP? A simple google search results in nothing related to door video phones.
