Energy usage per year

Post by Chiel »

Chak, did you used around 5300 kwh a year? and do you save your 10% so far?
I've used 5765 kwh last year (2 person household) and i want to save some more then 10% but untill now i didn't find abnormal energy users that could save up a lot.
Are there more people here that want to tell how much energy they consume? Some months ago i didn't even realize i was using alot, but then i read somewhere that an avarage 4 person household consumes around 3500 kwh/year!! so i need to save some.......

3500 a year for a family with 2 kids can be done if they:
don't have a dishwasher
cook with gas
don't have a washdryer

I'm consuming like 6500KWH a year, family with 2 kids

Right, 3500 kWh is way to low!
5300 kWh comes first.

My goal is at least 10% looks like that it will be about 15% and will end somewhere around the 4500
4 person household including dishwasher and washdryer
there is no gas in my house so no choice for gas.
You can reach this easy when starting with replacement of you HA machine...For me it was 140 watt later 75 watt now 12 watt. Saving here is 1121 KW

I just looked up my usage over the last 3 years. This year we consumed just over 3500 kWh. We are a family of 4. We do have:
- Dishwasher
- Washingmachine with Dryer
- We cook on electricity
- 42" Plasma TV
- Windows 2K3 Small Business Server running 24h/24h
- Homeseer PC running 24h/24h

Image

And I'm still working on lowering the usage. My goal is to get an additional 5% off next year by killing stand-by machines. So 3500kWh can be done with all of these machines in house ;-))

This means that 2008 is estimation. I hope the real will be lower..first part of 2008 was high in my house..

WOW, I have to adjust my targets I believe.
Target was 6000kWh (used 6178kWh last year).
I think 5900kWh should be a good target.
We are a family of 5 and using the normal stuff (dishwasher, washdryer, cooking on gas)
The problem is probably the poolheating of 3kW (used a lot this summer)
I replaced the homeseerserver with a old laptop (from 120W to 30W), so not much gain there.

Anyone some tips to get started?

Start with collection info about usage of all your devices.
Replacement of lighting can be a topic.
you can save +/- 130 KW when replacing your HS with Asus eee box usage < 14 watt

I see a big difference in what is regarded as 'average'. It's hard to compare. I once did a 'Nuon EnergieAdvies'; the average for our type of household (number of adults & kids, type of house, equipment used) is, according to Nuon, 5300 kWh per year. I used 10000 kWh a year. But now i'm targeting for <7500 kWh for the next bill.

friend of mine uses 12000 kwh, according to some statistics.. if he turns of everything he is still would use 5000kwh a year.. so somewhere in his house there is something thats consuming alot. Trying to figure out what it is with him because its just really "too much" so far no luck (used plugwise) will now use rfxmeter on each group to see where enegery is going (and how much)
