RFXtrx433 + Antenne replacement + TFA TS34C

Post by raymonvdm »

Due to reception issues in the past Bert gave me the tip to replace the antenna of the RFXtxr433 with this one

Antenne 433 MHz 50 ohm grondvlak GP 433 and the following converter BNC NAAR SMA VERLOOPSTEKKER

I now have replaced the antenne but the issues remain (although sending to KAKU is much easier and therefore the antenna seems to work)

I use five of the following temp sensors TFA TS34C and would like to know if it is wise te replace the internal antenne of the sensor.

I have the biggest issues with the sensors in the Livingroom and Kitchen because these are the most distance one of the all (antenne is on the attic)

try with the groundplane horizontal or upside down.

In the normal position the signals below the antenna are attenuated.

Do you mean the sensors or the RFXcom antenne ? The antenne is now placed on a DIY pole like this

I already tried changing the direction of the sensors

Position the groundplane antenna horizontal or up side down (not the sensors)

The direction of the antenne makes no difference in al cases the last node is not reachable

Is it possible to attach an antenna just like this

You can try with an external antenne connected to the sensor for example
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antenna-433Mhz- ... em2577763d

Check also chapter 2.5 http://www.rfxcom.com/Documents/RFXtrx% ... 0Guide.pdf

or install the ground plane one floor down if possible.

I`m waiting for the delivery of a RaspberryPi to see if i can use it with SOCAT or USBIP, in that way i`m also able to move the bluetooth proximity dongle to a lower floor

Is it better for reception to have the rfxcom downstairs or on the attic?

Mine is downstairs in the living room, and with the normal antenne i can reach the attic.
But must say that i have a wood floor on the attic.

In my whole home all the wals are made of steel reinforced concrete. I now have the antenne in the hall on the second Floor and got good reception indoors, but I cant reach my garden or front outside.

I actually made a J-pole antenna as i have the same problems with the range being not great at all.
Since i changed the antenna it seems a bit better but not as much as you would expect.

Here is a link for others to calculate the measurements for this antenna:

http://www.pa3eki.nl/jota/jpole_calc.htm

or

http://www.kb3kai.com/j-pole-calculator

Cheap antenna with decent gain but not impressive, you can use a beam/directional antenna but that is useful for distances and not in the whole house of course.
I still do not receive any of my sensors from the Oregon wmr200 weather station btw.
Also modified some sensors with a external antenna , and on some it does make a difference but some it doesn't

For you sensors it is possible to use a directional antenna such as a yagi type. This will greatly improve their range, not their looks :-)
I also noticed that in winter time the reception of sensors signals, including those inside the house are declining. Some days the work better the other days.
In HF transmissions, mainly at short wave frequencies) you have something called weather conditions that influence the transmission range. I don't know how far this extense to the 433mhz range.

It would be nice if the legal transmitted power limit could be a little higher,
as seen in China were much of these rules make no sense and most equipment has no problems with bigger distances.
Only thing is the spectrum gets filled with more signals and cause collision probably resulting in no working devices or faulty codes being sent.
In house most of my equipment wireless seems to work but when going outside or passing a wall or 2 more the fun is over.

The effective radiated power, as defined in EN 300 220-1 [1], clause 7.3.1, shall not exceed the limits in EN 300 220-1 [1], clause 7.2.3, table 5.
EN 300 220-1 [1], clause 7.2.3, table 5 says: 433,050 MHz to 434,790 MHz Maximum radiated power, e.r.p. = 10mW

I was looking at the following antenna:

uk.rs-online.com/web/p/rfid-antennas/79 ... 3433353426

Should I expect some improvement over the stock antenna?
