At this moment I am running windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my Asus EB1501P (Intel Atom(TM) CPU D525 @ 1.80GHz)
This low power PC (13Watt under full load!) is my Home Domotica Server, and also used as HTPC

The server is running:
Homeseer PRO
XAMPP (Webserver with php, mysql, and ftp)
Plugwise server

For general data storage I would like to have some network storage options. I don't want to buy a NAS for this purpose because it would use more power than the server which is running 24/7 already.

Which software can be used to add NAS functionality to my server? I have been looking on the internet, but can't find anything..

Also I am wondering if it would be smart to switch from windows 7 to windows server 2008 R2??

If you have a server running already then what's wrong with just a share to a folder?

I think because its a home edition version, less options.

I believe I found a solution:
Soon I will try the next option:

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2

NAS: FreeNAS running virtual under VMWARE player.

This should add the NAS functions (ftp, shares, streaming, etc) to my server.

I don't get it.
Windows Server 2008 R2 will give you already ftp, shares, streaming etc.
So why put extra load on the server by adding FreeNAS running under VMWARE player?

After some testing with windows 7 home and getting disapointed, I decided to go a different way.

Last weekend I have been busy setting up the following configuration:

Hardware:
Asus EEEbox EB1501P (updated to 4GB ram)
2 x WD 2.5" usb 3.0 external HDD 1TB
1 x WD 2.5" usb 2.0 external HDD 320GB
Plugwise USB receiver

Software:
Windows Home Server 2011
Homeseer PRO 2.5.0.20
Plugwise source 2.21
XAMPP Webserver
iCloud Control Panel
uTorrent 3.0 with Web GUI
VLC Media player

The 320GB external HDD is used as system backup of my internal system HDD. WHS is set to create a backup twice a day.
The two 1TB external HDD's are used in a mirror set as main storage for my media files.

uTorrent is installed as a service and iCloud control panel is installed to syncronise my iphone images with my server media.

The reason why I am using external HDD's is the lack of space in the EEEbox, and the fact I already owned the 320GB HDD.
The two 1TB disks where with on sale with a nice discount last week

Until now the system is running great, and I clearly noticed a response improvement of Homeseer
in comparison with the previous installation under windows 7 home edition.

With this setup I don't use any VM but the system can't be migrated easily to another PC if needed...
