THECUS HAD ONE thing we've been wanting for a long time at Computex, NAS boxes with more than five drives. It also comprehensively updated its entire line as well.
The N4100 and N5200 lines are now updated with at 'pro' designation, which means that the 4100 is updated to a Geode CPU. This allows the maker to put the same firmware across lines since they are all x86 now, and support an updated LCD panel.
Thecus N7700
Far bigger News is the new N7700 seven-bay model This one is powered by a Celeron M 2.0 CPU, has the obvious seven bays, and a gig of DDR2. It also sports 2 GigE ports and a PCIe slot if you want more. The rest of it appears to be very similar to the N5200, the only addition I saw on the spec sheet was RAID6 and live RAID level migration support.
There is also a rack-mount version called the N8800, it is the same as the N7700 in a rack mount case. The 2U case also allows them to put in one more drives, hence the 8800 designation. Otherwise it is the same board. Both the N7700 and N8800 have what is listed as IP camera support, so it looks like you can use them as a dump for surveillance videos without any PC mediating.
Media Center M3800
The last one was a bit of a surprise, but it makes a lot of sense, a media center-based NAS called the M3800. It is a three drive unit with the LED on the bottom enhanced with more buttons and a little better readout. On the back it has HDMI and SPDIF optical outs, and ships with a remote control.
The OS is a custom job, very likely Linux based, that looks very similar to every other media center out there. This is not to say it looks bad, it is just getting hard to tell one from another nowadays. You have to admit that a 3TB media center that is also your home NAS makes a lot of sense.
