Which touchscreen for HST?

Post by Herbus »

Finally my Albatron died. So I’m looking for a new touchscreen.
Wishes:
No sweep lock (always available)
Possibility to pop-up video screen (e.g. doorcam)
Size 7 – 11”
Capacitive screen
If possible: wall mount
Applications: HSTouch if possible Sonos

I use my iPhone/iPad/iPod for all other applications and therefore want a dedicated HSTouch screen.

What are your suggestions?

Ipad or or a Android tablet is the best choice.
When you go for the android.. select a one with CPU > 1 Ghz

I'm using the Ipad with the Brodit mount.

I have order a new mount system will post when arrived.

I played a bit with the Acer Iconia W500 and A500 (Windows and Android) at IFA2011, both look like good multitouch tablets for use in home automation. I think I'll try the W500 for my windows based touch interface.

Problem (for me) with an Android device is that you will need to buy a HomeSeer licens for the Android plugin.
This plugin is way to expensive.

I understand your requirements (I have the same).
Don't want to use the iPad because (not I AM using an iPad with HST but not as my primary (fixed) screen
- 'swipe to unlock'
- I cannot switch the screen on remotely (message popup, alarm, video)

Well i do run hst allong with squeezepad on my ipad1.

No reconnects or wait for hst to build the screens thanks to backgrounder. Something that doesnt run good with new versions of the ios.
Thats something i dont like about the ipad, not the abbility to maintain the connection with out jailbreaking it.

I dont know how thats done on a android tablet, but would be intresting to investigate as you want to run sonos and hst in the background
and dont want to wait on reconnecting and other stuff that makes you wait.

I use the Ipad as main screen almost a year.

There is no need for slide to unlock and I can switch to any screen triggered by events..

Step one
Automatic lock: Never

In HST build a black screen and call this your main screen.(return to main screen in 5 minuts)
When the screen is not touched for more then 5 minutes it will turn black..when touched it will go to the real main screen.

Ipad is always on..and hst is running all the time.

Power consumption 2 watt per hour
singel touch will show the main screen...
when the phone rings it will go to the phone screen...
Other events will show the frontdoor camera. etc..

So you're saying that your iPad screen is switched on 24/7?

Hmm.. never thought about that.. First thought based on no facts or knowledge: "that can't be good for the ipad or the screen?"

iPad sounds good. I assumed that the iPad wouldn't fit my requirements.
If the iPad is dedicated used for HST a iPad 1 will be enough. On 'Marktplaats' you can buy one for approx Euro 250,--

Nice solution! Thanks for the feedback.

What about the following Android tablet: Odys LOOX 7" internet tablet?

I assume HSTouch Andriod works on this.

Price is only around at €100, has WiFi B/G/N, multi-touch capabilities and a 1.2Ghz processor. At least a lot cheaper than the cheapest iPad.

Only drawback I see is possibly it's 800x640 screen resolution. However, given the price this may be used 'easier' as a dedicated Home control touchscreen.

Now, I have no personal experience with Android, nor with this tablet (Ipads, Wintel and Prontos are my area). Maybe anyone else has and can chime in here...

One word of advise here.
Make sure that the device can be upgraded. If no firmware for that device is available then in the future you might not be able anymore to run HST. (other then an older version)

800x640 is a reasonable screen size.
It will do nicely. I looked this tablet up and i saw that it has Android 2.3 on it, that's oke. I have an adroid tablet here with much lesser specs and that was doing fine till the wifi broke down. Overal the specs of this Odys tablet are good enough for a HST controller.
Btw, Conrad.nl has them too
