that's a big question...

girder is my main control system (programming language is lua)

netremote, is the user interface and gets it's data from girder (and also communicates with other applications to control music/video etc.)
(programming language is also lua)

some 1024x768 tabletpc example screens are here (umpc screens are 800x480, so are a bit different)
http://tinyurl.com/2mujvx

netremote has pc and pocketpc versions (I don't use the pocketpc version myself)....

girder runs on a low power xp pc (no hard disk, only flash)
http://www.promixis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16937

I use X10 to control my lights+central heating+alarm clock
I use rfxcom stuff to measure power usage
and have x10 motion detectors in every room.
the room lights are controlled by the motion detectors...
(there is special logic to detect if i'm home or sleeping or if a room is occupied, so the lights don't go off, if you don't move for a while)

I use an irtrans ethernet device to control the various infrared devices (tv,digital tv set-top box etc.)

I check via bluetooth if my mobile phone is in-range. if not, the system assumes that I'm not home (so won't switch on lights/alarm clock/central heating etc.)...

I use 1-wire to get temperature/pressure/moisture/light level
(e.g. if it is bright outside, the living rooms lights go off)

I use an ISDN modem for caller id.

and I also control my central heating (1-wire temperature controlled)

and a Kettler treadmill for my daily workout (heartrate controlled)...

I use an optimus mini-3 as central heating/alarm clock control panel :
http://www.promixis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16047

The picture you see in the previous message, is basically a web page with the floorplan made with SVG (scalable vector graphics, so screen resolution independent) running inside netremote (which has a built-in web server) I've also implemented this floorplan 'stand alone' using girder's built-in webserver.

the screen is updated every 0.5 second or so, using ajax technology...

the light/motion detectors/room occupancy/radiators change colour
and you can click on the lights to switch them on/off (I don't use dimming)

(there's lots more functionality, like trend graphs, weather, traffic, rss feeds, email/voicemail announcement, music, video, streaming live tv etc. etc.)

Hi Marcel,
That's exactly where I want to use the UMPC for. I have been reading your topic on Promixis as well!
Your settings are looking very good. The big question is then: is the ASUS RH2v sufficient for the job you described?
Is the cooler a problem when watching television etc?

note that it runs vista, but the graphics chip (on any UMPC on the market) is not powerful enough to show the aero theme...

otherwise, I have no problems with the graphics performance...

for most jobs, the cpu will only run at 600Mhz anyway...
and you can also undervolt it, if you want...

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">Is the cooler a problem when watching television etc?<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">for me, the fan noise is acceptable, if I am watching tv and I put the device about 1 meter from my chair...

I don't know what your tolerance is for noise...
(I spent a lot of money on silencing all pc's in my house)

p.s. it's very easy to reduce the noise, by putting some black electrical tape over (part of) the fan exhaust ...

but of course, that will increase the temperature a bit.

the hard disk max temp. is 60C (and it's running at 55C-58C already) .
So, I plan to replace it with a sandisk 32GB SSD in the future (which has a max temp of 70C). before I block the fan exhaust permanently...

(too bad, I can't buy an SSD anywhere yet:probably 2008 )

also note that there are driver updates on the asus website..

you can build your own SSD disk using
http://www.cf2ide.nl/product_info.php?c ... ucts_id=34
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/147116/C ... -III).html

the max capacity is than 16 Gb for now

you can only fit a device, that replaces the 1.8" hard disk with a zif socket...

luckily, the 80Gb hard disk inside the asus is 8mm high (same size as 32GB sandisk ssd with case) some smaller 1.8" hard disks are only 5mm high (in that case, a samsung ssd without case, should fit...)

Thats an good option to, replace the harddisk for a 16gb compact flash card, should be enough for Home automation purposes! Don't know yet if these devices have SATA connectors?
I have ordered the Adapt MX1200 UMPC, so lets see what my experiences will be.

I finally managed to find a 32 Gb SSD (1.8" zif socket).
for my asus UMPC

note 300mA versus 500mA:

now, I can throttle the fan without worrying that I will destroy my hard disk (doesn't like temperatures > 65C)

I got this USB box to put the old 80Gb hard disk in,
but I'm not happy with it.(too much mechanical stress on the flatcable)
I need to get a better USB box.

Still a bit expensive for me...

But I'm a big supported of SSDs from the very beginning. In fact, if/when I have an UMPC, the first thing I would do would be exactly the same thing you did. :)

Recently I received the ASUS R2E UMPC running VISTA :-(
Thinking about installing XP

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">I can't really tell you, because I haven't done any tests with the old hard disk.

I've only just installed Vista + SP1 -> that leaves about 15Gb free on the SSD

my main reason for buying it, was the extended temperature range
so that I can reduce the fan speed...

I found the A110 & Celeron too slow...

of course, I assume that on your device, the fan noise is not an issue because it generates less heat than mine ?

R2H = 0.9 GHz Celeron.
R2Hv = 1.0 GHz Pentium M.
R2E = 0.8 GHz A110.

did you install SP1 ?

also :

http://origamiproject.com/forums/thread/19843.aspx

did you check the current power options ?

some options, prevent the cpu from going to 100% when needed.
(e.g. on my R2HV : Power4Gear 'Quiet Office' mode only allows the cpu to go to 70%)
