ADAPT MX1200 UMPC touchpanel
Hi Guy's,
For controlling my Home Automation System I'm planning to buy an UMPC
My eye is on the ADAPT MX1200 Ultra Mobile PC.
http://www.adapt-mobile.com
<b>MX1200 features:</b>
- Processor VIA 1.2 GHz C7M NaNo (BGA onboard)
- Main Memory 1GB 533MHz DDR
- Hard Drive 2.5" 9.5mm, 60GB UDMA 133, 5,400rpm
- Display Ultra Slim 7 " Wide-Angle View TFT LCD
- Display Resolution 800x480 Native, Zoom display 800x600, 1024x600 @ 800x480
- Bluetooth Bluetooth 2.0 Class 1
- Wi-Fi QCOM 802.11b/g WLAN
- Trackpoint mouse control
- SD/MMC card reader
- Webcam 1.3Mp
- Windows Vista Home Premium
- Sizes 230mm x 150mm x 25mm (W x H x D)
- Weight 850 Grams with 3-cell Battery Pack
I know there are other types of UMPC's like the new ASUS RH2v, but for some reason they left out the Desk stand, so you can only carry it! For home automation purposes I need a desk stand.
Other UMPC's
- ASUS RH2v (has the most options but no desk stand [V])
- AMtek T770 (makes a lot of noise)
- Gigabyte U60
- Raon Digital Everun (to small and light equipped)
- Samsung Q1 Ultra (only very short on the market)
- Sony VAIO (to small and expensive)
They are mostly running on MS Vista which worries me also, But I can always install Windows XP.

ADAPT MX1200 UMPC touchpanel
I would only prefer to have a browser, which is all i need on it. And wifi then, but my biggest problem would be the duration of a battery. Which is not long for these devices. Same issue i had with my wifi phone, its empty within 24 hours.
Also if you have a big house, it might be handy to check if you have signal for your wifi everywhere.

The UMPC is mostly on the same place in my house, it can announce messages and I can control the house by touchscreen. I can also take it of and browse for a while on the sofa So for 98% of the time its on power. The advantage that you have is easy to place in an existing house, the power of a complete PC and when you go away on holiday you can take it with, controlling your house and more. Wifi is no problem on the lower level of my house.

Pieter,
I have the Asus version.
Most of the time I use it to watch photo's and video's
For normal laptop usage they are not so ideal.
Asus is using Intel processor..i think the VIA will be not so fast but better for the battery and the heat.
Asus has built in desk stand and there is a extra one more robust in the box.

Hi Chak,
Then you have the ASUS RH2 ?, the new version is the ASUS RH2v which has no built in desk stand and also not one in the box!
I don't understand why Asus made this change. The Asus you have is good enough for controlling you Home automation system? I wanna use it as a substation which is based on TCP-IP connected with the Bwired server.
<b>R2Hv features:</b>
- Intel ULV Pentium M-processor 1 GHz
- 80GB Harddisk
- 1,28 GB memory
- 7-inch WVGA TFT touchscreen
- Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
- SD/MMC-cardreader
- 1.3 megapixel webcam
See the backgroen of the ASUS RH2v, no built in desk stand?

Pieter,
I have the old version you are right.
I think they use the desk stand space for the extra battery volume.
The battery time of my device is very bad.
The functionality is good you can use it with any application.
The Wifi chip of the old one is very weak I hope they have upgraded the chip or the software.

Hi Enver,
That confirms it! thanks.
Because there is no desk stand delivered anymore I'm not gonna buy the ASUS [V]
I think the ADAPT MX1200 is as fast as the ASUS RH2v with its VIA 1.2 proc.

Why not use a PSP? It has WiFi, a built-in browser, it's readily available it it's reasonably priced. And you can play games on it
ADAPT MX1200 UMPC touchpanel
It's an option, I will check out the possibilities! But I think I wanna do a little more then using the built in webbrowser. The screen needs to be really active like when somebody calls me on the phone it needs to alert me, Doorbell rings, the camera window should pop up. With an UMPC I think I am much more flexible.

I think the startup and WIFI connect time will be a problem when using PSP

Pieter,
I got my asus r2hv from here :
http://www.umpcshop.nl/product/43127/asus-r2hv.html
I didn't want a via or celeron processor, so I went for the asus...
it has a battery which does have a deskstand (so the picture is wrong)...
I wrote some comments about it here :
http://www.promixis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17063
If you want me to take a picture of the back, to show the deskstand, let me know...
(p.s. this is my first post here )

Hi Marcel,
Thanks for the reply, can you please put an image on the form or mail me one!
I even mailed the guys of the UMPC shop and they told me there was no stand with it [:(!]

here's some pictures :
note that the label on the battery states 'R2H' but the UMPC is in-fact an 'R2HV' (pentium M 1Ghz)
It seems that there are different types of batteries ??
please try the promixis link again, the site seems to be busy, it works ok for me now ???
interesting list of the performance of various processors used in UMPC's :
Core Solo (1200) MHz : 806 (123%) UX280p

Celeron M (900) MHz : 580 (89.09%)

VIA C7M (1500) MHz : 448 (68.82%) OQO 02
Celeron M (900) MHz : 417 (64.06%) R2H, no cache.

Hi Marcel
Thanks for the information!
The links are working, it was a busy site indeed.
Hard choices for me, The USUS with Pentium has a better performance then the VIA CM7.
On the otherhand I don't like the loud cooler, don't know how load the Adapt MX1200 is.
Then I have to contact the UMPCshop again because I have to be sure there is a stand on the back.
I can see you use it for the same purpose I like to use it....contrlling my home.
How did you do that, I want to connect on IP base with my home automation system.
Regards Pieter
