Best handheld controler for AV and Zwave

Does anyone have any tips for a handheld remote to use with my AV and Zwave? My Logitech 890 Pro is failing now and then.

I have a RFXcom and a lightmanger and a logitech Harmony one.

If I press "watch TV" on my Harmony,
the tv and the PVR go's on,
the Harmony send a IR signal to the lightmanger,
who's on his turn send a signal to the RFX-com,
and homeseer turns the ceiling lights off.

Its alot of devices to turn off one light with one remote control but it works !

For AV use 1 remote, for zwave use hstouch for instance.

And with AV and 1 remote, i mean make sure you have all devices hooked up. So get a hdmi-cec enabled media player, get hdmi-arc on your av-receiver, have hdmi-cec on your tv. Basicly when i turn on my media player, it will turn on my t.v. which in turn will switch on my receiver, and it will notice that it needs to use the Blueray setting. If i shutdown my mediapayer (by using the tv remote) it shuts down everything.

On most samsung led models you have cec, and also a good amount of buttons too. In my kitchen i have a samsumg with rasperry pi. So when i boot up the pi, it start up the t.v. and changes the channel, and i can use the samsung remote to control the pi device.

There is also a Merten CONNECT Universal Remote. maybe is this a option for your AV & z-wave setup.
I don't have experience with this device, but maybe some other members.

And using the hub that comes with the Harmony Ultimate?

It is not possible too controll z-wave devices directly with the hub.

Z-wave works on 868.4 MHz frequency and the harmony with 2.4GHz frequency. so they cant reach each other.

Maybe is it possible to control wifi controlled lights like the Philips hue series. these work on 2.4 GHz.



The harmony 895 is able to control z-wave devices, but you can only control the z-wave system with the harmony, not with a controller like a vera or homeseer.

Hi Joris,

Your question prompted me to start thinking about my own situation. And wishes for remote control for both AV & Home automation (including Z-wave).

A solution could be:
Harmony (with many scenes programmed) --> via radio wave--> Harmony hub/blaster --> via IR output--> AV devices and IRTrans device --> Homeseer --> z-wave devices

I have the Harmony with IR blaster (Harmony 900, an older version of the Ultimate w/hub) but do not yet have IRTrans.
The IRTrans thing can read IR output signals and be hooked into Homeseer. Perhaps it can also be linked to other controllers (Fibaro,...) but that I do not know

What I do not know, but I'm sure the answers are to be found on the internet:
1. Which IR codes must the Harmony learn in order to send the proper IR codes to IrTrans?
2. How IRTrans physically connects to the Homerseer PC. Serial cable, USB, via ethernet, via...?
3. Which configuration of IrTrans to buy. They have a large range of devices.

Another solution is to keep AV and Z-wave controllers separate. For Z-wave I would suggest the Aeon MiniMotes.

I just heard from Enver that remote control reception & control with Fibaro also is possible. So not only using Homeseer.

Instead of using IrTrans, use GlobalCaché. I have not heard of it before but I found their website:

Hi olof. I switched from irtrans to global cache. Works fine. I use the itach wifi2ir. Never had a missed signal. Disadvantage is that it isnt a repeater. So it doesnt repeat irsignals send from the harmony. Which can be nice when your hifi is in a cabinet.

I use hstouch now for controling my hifi and therefore i dont have a problem with this. But its a danger if homeseer isnt as stable as you wish it would be
