Range problems Z wave

Post by marinus »

Z wave range.
Hello there,
I am new on this forum and a new bie in th e field of Z wave.
I recently bought some Fibaro stuff such as the HC2 a shutter, switches, and dimmers.
Although the doc is mentioning a range in the open field up to 50 m I would be glad if this was 20 m.
I tested the grid connected units with eye contact and no obstacles.
What can be done to improve this?
I am thinking of a range extender but do I need two of these units as it is a communication in two directions?
Why do grid connected units so often fall asleep. Is this caused by the problem mentioned above?
Regards,
Marinus

This post has been read over 200 times and still no reply?
Does this mean that I am the only one or are my expectations too high?
I am also having trouble that several nodes fall asleep more than once a day.
What can that be?

A range extender is always a work-around and not a real fix :D

Z-Wave is based on a mesh network and the more nodes you get the better coverage will be achieved. How did you place you HC2 antenna? Up and free from nearby adapters and stuff. and the how about the antenna`s of the modules? Up and as free as possible? I tried to put them in the upwords pipe whenever possible. I`m using HomeSeer and a Aeons Labs Z-wave stick and my adapter is hanging on the sealing with a usb cable to get if away from noise.

So play with the location of HC2 sometimes moving it 30 cm can make a huge difference. Grid units should never fall a sleep

Note: I had a Kruidvat Led strip adapter which killed my Wifi and Z-Wave network due to noise on the powergrid #badpower
Running HS3PRO on PC with Z-Wave / OpenTherm / Plugwise / RFXcom / MQTT / XAP400 / Logitech Media Server and Squeezelite on PI`s

Yep, that (200 reads and just 1 reply, I mean) is what can happen.
A few possible reasons for why none of those 200 responded might be:

1. Maybe you're asking a question that has been discussed over and over again...
As in: once a question has been posted too often, we all get a bit too lazy to respond..
I can't really comment on that, especially since I don't follow Z-Wave related topics that much since I don't use it.
What I do know is that Z-Wave is not "the holy grail" ... it has its own set of problems and shortcomings.

2. None of them has ever faced your problem so they can't help you because they don't have any clue how to solve this.
Very unlikely if you ask me.

3. They have the same problem, don't have a real solution for it and just live with it. However, they're reluctant to share admitting the fact that their not-so-cheap hardware is not always working that well as they expected. It may feel like admitting a wrong choice of hardware, although IMHO it's not. But I can understand that it may be kinda hard to share that some $$$ set of HA hardware doesn't work that well...

And maybe it's a combination of those 3 options, I don't know...

Oh and sorry, cause this reply won't help you solve your issue either...

Or one know Fibaro have some problems but isn't a Fibaro user and therefore don't feel clever. :-) http://forum.fibaro.com/viewtopic.php?p ... 4550#42005

Hi Marinus,

I recently also bought some Z-Wave stuff and also was disappointed by the range,
especially my AEON recessed door sensors, the only come as far as 6 meter, but on
the other hand, that might also be the problem of the Vision 1401 USB stick i am using.

Only Z-Wave stuff that is directly connected to mains functions as a repeater,
so for instance my AEON 4-in-1 multisensor which is connected with USB power
doesn't extend the signal

I ordered a couple of these Z-Wave lamp devices:
http://www.e-domotica.com/nl/e-domotica-lamphouder
that seems the cheapest way to get an extender. Will have to see how they
work out :o

have fun!
