very small (2cmx3cm), low cost (US$45) wifi enabled microcontroller : The 'Spark Core' :

The Hardware and software is open source and very much still under constant development.

The wifi module is the Texas Instruments CC3000 module. (Beware : CE certification is only for the chip antenna)

You can set the wifi access point up using your mobile phone or via usb.

The device comes with free ‘cloud services’ for the lifetime of the device, which includes a cloud based compiler, which flashes the device 'over the air'.

Note that compiling/flashing locally, using open source toolchains, is no problem and well documented.

(unlike other similar devices on the market) the cloud functionality is OPTIONAL and you can use it with your own infrastructure or OFFLINE.

(The source code, to replicate the cloud functionality on your own server, is not yet released.)

I discarded other low cost wifi devices, that are currently on the market (or on kickstarter),
that force you to use their proprietary cloud infrastructure (usually for a fee…) (e.g. electric imp etc.)
