Need a new tv, wonder what forum members have

Post by r_255 »

I am look for a new tv, and to be honnest it drives me crazy.

1st of all, i dont watch that much television and movies usually make me so relaxed that i tend to fall a sleep.
Most important of all is intergration in my ha system.

3d isnt something i am after, but i do like the ambilight feature... and then the spectre 3 version.
so generally i am looking for philips, but i must admit that i am very charmed with the looks of the samsung and their prices.

So i am in the market for these models :

Samsung ue40d6510
Good looking led tv with a ultra small white bezel.
http://www.plasma-discounter.nl/led-tv/ ... 163723.htm
( cheapest price i found : eu 939.- )

Philips 40pfl9706
Topline led
http://www.philips.nl/c/9000-serie-full ... 12/prd/nl/
( Cheapest price 40" 1249.- or the 32" pfl9706 for 699. )

Samsung ue40d7000
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGJJphDv5K4
( cheapest price i found : eu 1250.- )

I tend to go for the philips, as that one gots the jointspace.. wich is mentioned earlier here on the forum but wondered if there are any expierences on these models ?
in the end its a lot of bucks for some one who doesnt watch that much and for real movie pleasure there is always my epson beamer as the screen just drops down in front of my tv there isnt need for a 65" model ;o)

Now this offer at redcoon dropped in for the 32" philips 699,- seems a reasonable price for the philips with a lot of features.
But after reading for several weeks i am snow blinded and dont know what to get any more :O)

So wondered what the expierences are here on the forum and what kind of tv you use in combination with home automation, i did have a look at homeseer, but there doesnt seem to be a tv plugin for recent models.

@ LG almost any model hosts a serial port with a known protocol. So if you want to be able to control your TV, LG is your best buy. Other brands sometimes have rs232 ports and newer ones can be controlled through network.

Richard allready beat me to it....
I went for an LG one half a month ago.... setting up the Serial Comms took the better part of ten minutes thanks to the wonderfull manual.

Just about all the discreet options I need (power, equalizer, inputs etc.) and reliable status.
No more IR for me anymore.

Slightly OT but nice to know. The LG owners manual is not always correct as for the command set. Source switching is different per model but nothing you can't figure out by yourself, however the new CI+ models didn't show the correct commands in the manual. We had to talk to the manufacturer to get the right codes for DTV and Analogue switching.

Thanks for your advice, but i went for the 'relative' cheap option and ordered the philips 32" inch with ambilight spectre 3, dlna, nettv and support for jointspace.
699,00 seems to be a fair price for a led tv with these specs and still saves me some money for other gadgets/projects.

I must admit LG looks pretty good, but some how spectre3 and the other options did it for this price. I want to see blood on the wall when playing my fave game. ;o)
Also serial is kind of hard to connect due to the cables that are already inwall and server placement.

but thanks for sharing your opinion, ill share some pictures when its hanging on the wall.

Hey Robin,

Sorry to see you message after you bought a new TV. In my business most people are very critical and we have these discussions on a regular base. Most people and companies choose the higher range Samsungs now 7000 and 8000 series etc. (It used to be Panasonic Plasma's before)
I do have a Samsung at home and when I see my own work back on TV it never looks right anyway, due to compression and scaling issues but they are indeed the best "bang for the buck" in my opinion.

@r-255: Funny how you ask the question today about what to buy and a couple hours later already decided

Hey Bastiaan, hope you are doing fine

I agree. Did my round at the media markt and the Samsung was the one with the most artificial colours. But also the most appeling to the eye.
Colours where more saturated and they could have fooled me by telling me it is a plasma. And like in work the colours i have on screen some how never end up on paper, so that sounds very familiar

But its the price that made me choose easy, philips got decent colour and the ambi light is fun when gaming and as formal VJay there is some passion about sound, light and pictures.
and correct me that it was panasonic and pioneer that where best at plasma ;o)

@Richard, your input is much appreciated... the offer on the 32" made me decide that quick, and i got fed up reading waking up with my hand on the pad browsing for televisions. :D
I am already looking for a few weeks, and there is not much about this subject on our forum.... so maybe not for me but for others the information about how and what others use can be very intresting.

Hi Robin,

Most monitors are set to 'automatic contrast' or some sort of idiot color rendition. Just switch to a more natural look usually called 'movie', neutral or "natural".
Turn off automatic contrast and color options and you get to see the real screen capabilities.
Don't belief that there was a thing call 8000:1 contrast in this world :-) (Samsung advertising).
The differences now comes from tube or LED backlight and if it is side light or backlit. Best results are backlit with LED's because then they can switch the LED's off in the darker area's. Enhancing the (bad) LCD contrast a bit more and that is a pretty decent way.

Never, ever heard somebody buying a TV for the ambilight :-)
But have fun with it.

Nah, if i was that crazy, i would buy the aurea
But to be honnest it's a gimic for music videos or gaming... i dont see me watch the 8 o'clock journal with ambilight.

But serious,
it has ISF calibration, local led diming, opensource platform, and the price was very attractive for a 9000 series tv.
Oh and even the ambilight can be calibrated to the color of the background wall

Features, thats what i am after...

In the end i could not justify the price of a ue40d7000 to my self, but it got really itchy ( almost forgot about the 3d cnc machine i am building )
Also liked the 2nd tv option on the samsung as it lets you stream your tv to a galaxy II or tab, but seems restricted to local network use and those devices due to hdcp copyright isues.

Well i am happy, as i had a old tatung and see much improvement on any part sofar.
