Low power usage pc

Post by Shariff »

Hey there,

I am looking for some advice on a pc/box that is low in power usage but has some calculating power. I plan to run at least my database on it, I prefer to run SQL Server, but if it's a linux box I can run postgres, will also do.

If possible I'd also like to make that the hub for all my (future) devices. Right now I use a RPI 2B, but I don't want to run too much on it all at once, since that's not where its strengh lies.

Any advice?

With kind regards,
Kevin

I like the Intel NUCs.

If I remember right my newest NUC runs at around 7-8 Watt at normal use.

Raspberry PI is also an alternative. I am busy with the migration of my HA from PC to Pi. Currently database and messages broker are done and it looks ok.

Hi Bart,

I'm also interested in the setup you are using. I'm also running ESXi with a couple of VM's and 4 HDD and 1 SSD.. Idling at around 36 watt

I`m using an HP Desktop DC7900 which is running at 50 Watt, not quite nice but it was a machine i already had. I might switch over to a NUC or BRIX but i don`t know wich cpu i need.

It is just running Windows 7 and HS2/HS3 without VMware because i had USB issues with VMware

Not sure what you want to do exactly but if you can offload computational power to a GPU, this might be an option:

https://developer.nvidia.com/jetson-tk1

low power, high performance. Runs linux and is bloody fast.

grtz,

the NUC solution is nice, since i am also a windows user...
The 1.45 - 2 watt consuption from the odroid print is also very attractive
Found this :

46° C: 1.500 W with fan off, ambient
32° C: 2.068 W with fan forced on, ambient
32° C: 1.446 W with fan off, ambient
26° C: 2.080 W with fan forced on, in fridge
20° C: 1.412 W with fan off, in fridge

I have been looking in building a low energy consuming computer, but since i am using Blueiris for the IP camera's i need some cpu power.
Blueiris eats cpu :(
