Electric Roller blind - Remote controlling

Hey guys,
I'm doing a school project and I really want it to work. Unfortunately do I know very little about eletronics.
I'm making an eletric roller blind with a 12V DC tranmission motor which I would like to remotely control (up and down, by holding buttons).
From what I know, I need a handtransmitter and a receiver for the motor, but that's it. Here a couple of questions:
What kind of receiver do I need?
And how is the receiver connected to the motor?
Does every handtransmitter work on a receiver, how do they relate?
I hope you could help me out at least with some beginning information to get me started.
