share software

Post by francisb »

Hello,

I see a lot of people who build there own software and build with it the most impressive websites.
Now i am not a programmer enough to build some software for example an RFXcom reciever.
So i hoped people would share there selfmade software for people who are not so skilled. And so help them to get started and get some simple results for example with power and gas measurements.

Why do people not share there software to help people but also to help each other to improve each others software?

cheers,

Francis

I did not develop my own software yet, but I developed some Homeseer plugins and I can imagine quite well why people do not want to share their homemade software. Starting to use software is most of the time not that obvious, see how many questions are asked related to Homeseer alone. This would mean all this questions need to be answered by the people who designed the software which is a hell of a job. Most of the time the software is usable/configurable for the persons who designed it but not user friendely enough for the 'unknown'.

Yes i understand, but thinks like getting data from a rfxcom reciever to a mssql database, is something almost standard and would help me to get started and learn. Also people who share can also choose to not answer any questions and tell the people to use it at there own risk and needs,
Would help me a lot.....

Why don't you take a look at Domotiga? It is completely shared and you can ask questions on this forum. There is also xPL as a free and open source initiative. Or is it just a specific solution that you would have wanted to be open source?

Well, i want my power and gas data into a mssql database, next thing is a website with charts. The website with charts is something i can probaly build myself.
This will help me a lot.

Francis Boter...?
If that's the case, I once shared (part of) my software with you, remember?
Only the compiled version of it, what happened to that?

Hi Francis,
Of course! But give me some time, it has been a while so I'll have to search my "archives" first.
I will reply later this weekend cause I'm facing some serious hardware problems right now: I don't know if my PC will boot again if I shut it down now.. :(

Hi,
I am too looking for a piece of software to get started.
i'm using homeseer now, but it' s just not exactly what i'm looking for.
It's easy to set up but just not as flexible as i would like.
The project airox is working on and showing his progress on this forum looks very promising.

Ok i dont have or use homeseer but if you look for something more flexible than that you never find it.
Or do you mean by flexible software with complete source, handbook and support?

If you can build webpages with graphs build them for domotiga, the rest is there already.
And others can benefit too, just like you want it. ;-)

By flexible i mean log data and use data in more ways then i can with homeseer.
If homeseer would log everything in mssql or mysql, that would be perfect.
With hstouch it 's very user friendly.

Domotiga would be a possibility, but i'm new to linux. And to be honest i didn't look into it.

Time is up, but no results so far.
I have been too busy with selecting a motherboard, CPU, SSD drives, RAM, getting the right OS, etc. etc. for my new server to spend time on this.
Sh*t happens; more News tomorrow. Or the day after.

Hi,

http://www.hekkers.net/files/PWG/PWG.rar

I found it, checked if it would still compile and it does :)
Currently it supports only MS SQL server, rest of the output formats is unfinished.
Have fun.
