Free Gnu Projects Domotica

Hi,

I m an intern at a Domotica Start-up. I m struggling to discover what is the gnu software that geeks are using right now, in order to develop domotic solutions.
I m not an engineer,and maybe that s why i m struggling!
Can you advise me something or some forums where i can get information?
