Today I finished my Arduino shield to interface for my soon to be installed smart meter. I'm using a high-speed low-power optocoupler to invert the signal. It connects to the Arduino serial input as well as normal input pin. This allows me to initialise the serial interface once the rx becomes high. The software is available on Github (see Digit's post).
