Confused about interfaces

Postby eew » Tue Oct 27, 2015 4:28 pm

I am considering building an OpenTherm gateway because I would like to control my heating with Tasker on my phone, and this seems to be the only way to do that.

In the past Kiwi-electronics sold a LAN and a Wifi version but all traces of these things have been erased. I can't find anywhere what parts I need to build one of these and what they where capable of. How did the Wifi one connect?

If I understand correctly I can build the USB version and attach a Raspberry PI to it and then just use Optentherm Monitor and send commands from my phone using MQTT or use the web server. Is this the case?

Would there be another way that does not require a Raspberry Pi to be on constantly and connect directly to the gateway. Was the vanished Wifi version capable of this? If yes, is there still a parts list an firmware somewhere. I would like as little devices as possible.

I have an Intergas Kombi compact and a Honneywell round, the typical Dutch social rent stuff. I am only interested in controlling the setpoint from Tasker on my phone as cheap as possible with as little devices as possible.

I haven't seen the WiFi version of the gateway, I'm interested in getting it as well.
My understanding is that one can connect the gateway to a NAS device, but again, it implies certain "topology" restrictions.

I did find this: https://www.kiwi-electronics.nl/downloa ... ctions.pdf

So unless I somehow port OT monitor to Android it seems a better idea to build the USB version and connect it to a Raspbery Pi with a Wifi adapter.

After doing a little bit more research I don't think it makes any sense. You need a computer that is always on anyway. I think I will just get get the board from Kiwi and source other parts from Conrad (probably cheaper, and I don't need the case) to build the USB version. I can then attach this to a Pi with a USB wifi dongle, and put the whole package in my boiler closet.

Making the OTGW Ethernet-enabled isn't that hard/expensive. Just buy a USR-TCP232 module and it has Ethernet.
I have order such a module: http://domoticz.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 05&p=58729 but i am still waiting for it. It costs about 11 dollar from China.

Be aware that it needs a 5V 200mA powersupply. You can supply it through an external adapter, or modify the transformer & DC-DC converter of the OTGW so it can supply enough current. I'm going the second route, so everything is nicely integrated in the OTGW itself.
See the topic about running extra equipment off the OTGW' powersupply: viewtopic.php?f=75&t=10193
