Troubleshooting

Post by bartandeweg »

Hi there,

I'm working on the DIY RS232 Gateway. Have some experience with electronics and soldering.
But. For some strange reason my Gateway is not working as it should be. When i'm troubleshooting it i get the first +4.92V on 5 and 14 of IC1 and the +4.92V on 15 & 16 of IC2. On X1 i'm measuring an nice 24,8V but no current at all....

Should i decrease R11? to get some current. Or is should i look somewhere else?

Are you sure you measured the current correctly? If you measure a voltage, you should also get a current.

On many multimeters, in addition to selecting a different setting, you need to plug the leads in different sockets. The current measuring circuitry is frequently protected by a fuse, which can easily be blown when trying to do a voltage measurement with the leads connected to the current sockets. So also check that fuse is still OK.

Alternatively use the described method of measuring the voltage over a resistor. Messing with R11 should only be done for minor adjustments to the current. With no current reading at all you should look for the problem elsewhere.
