OTGW using GPIO to capture events (buttons)

Hi!
First the first, thanks for all the work put on the OpenTherm Gateway.
I am planning to install an OTGW to monitor my boiler and I want to capture some maintenance events like gas tank fill or put more water in the circuit. This are manual tasks so my plan is to add a button so the person who make the maintenance task push it and the task will be recorded.
I saw that currently there is no option to use GPIO with push buttons. My main concern is to know if it is this feasible from a protocol/otmonitor app perspective, before trying to shine my rusty and forgotten PIC assembler skills. What do you think about?
Thanks in advance.
