OTGW Returning garbage

Post by diedvdyk »

Today I tried connecting my OTGW (assembled) to my boiler and thermostat.
Every wire combination I tried resulted in a not connected error on my thermostat.
So I start OTMonitor but that disconnected after few seconds.
A telnet session to OTGW returns a lot of garbage.
It's makes no difference whether the boiler or thermostat is connected.
Can someone help me debug this problem ?

Please try to describe how you connected the devices. What boiler do you have and which thermostat are u using (brand and type) How did you connect your pc and which os are u using. I have seen one occasion where ubuntu 12.04 did not work with the Prolific USB converter and 12.10 works fine.

Try to eliminate things :D

Type Boiler : Intergas HR22
Type thermostat : Honeywell Chronotherm Vision Modulation

This combination is working well and yes the cable is on 11 and 12 (Opentherm pins) on the Intergas Boiler.

I had the OTGW connected with the cable to the boiler on the boiler connecting and the cable to the thermostat on the thermostat connecting.
Does it matter how you connect the pins (I have a red wire and a blue wire) ?
I tried the red and blue in several combinations but the thermostat showed on each combination a not connected error.
Boiler is in the attic and the thermostat downstairs. Pffff

I've a usb cable connected to OTGW and have the lan/wifi/usb hub too.
So first I tried telnetting to the OTGW from my Windows 7 laptop : telnet 192.168.x.x 1001
After that I connected the usb directly to my Windows 7 laptop and used putty on the COM port.
Both showed a lot of garbage and not the initially diagnostic firmware page.
Then I tried otmonitor with the network and the usb setup.
OTmonitor lost connecting after a few seconds.
Finally I connected the USB of the OTGW to my little Cubox running a arm version of Debian.
The OTGW is recognised on /dev/ttyUSB0
I configured minicom for this tty, set it to 9600 Baud.
Unfortunately the same garbage again.

Question for testing purpose : Should the OTGW show something without the boiler and thermostat connected ?

If otmonitor disconnects, there's an issue with the serial port of your PC. The connection symbol only indicates otmonitor has a connection to the serial port. That will work even without anything plugged into the serial port. And once connected it should never disconnect (unless, in case of a USB serial device, you pull the USB cable).

I'm not using my serial port at all.
Only usb and network.
And this happens from two different computers.
So I do think there is another problem.

to update this topic. I've had some email communication about this problem with Diederick.
It seems this gateway uses a USB-TTL cable on a PCB with a MAX232/ST2030 chip. I've adviced to remove this chip and make the wire-bridge as described in the manual on my website.

Diederick, can you confirm your results?

Flue thanks for clarifying this problem to me.
I feel so stupid now  RTFM pfff

Furthermore Flue offered to do the hardware modification for me for small amount of money.
Of course I've accepted his offer because I haven't the tools to do this myself.

Flue you're the greatest ! :D
