[FIXED] Possible OTG failure ?

Post by raymonvdm »

For quite some time i was using the OpenThermGateway but after today it seems to be dead. I`m not shure whats happening. And if it is software / hardware / or maybe even interference related.

The gateway was sitting happy next to the boiler on a shelf and today i finished another project "Starcase Lights" and i think it is just coincidence but all of a sudden the boiler started heating. Hmm strange let check HS2 nope seems fine should not be heating. Next check down stairs on the thermostat, hmmm no display.. Back to the attic i disconnected the OTG en connected the thermostat directly to the boiler. Tada problem solved. Placed the OTG back in business and yet again the problem is back. Disconnected the adapter of "Starcase Light" which is giving me a loud noise sound next to my pc speaker so it is pending replacement but this should not be an issue when it is unplugged

I measured X1 and it gave me 21,5 volts when the thermostat is not connected and around 6 volts when the thermostat is connect (but the display is not working) i`m not sure what to do next. The 5 volt on IC1 and IC2 are fine as stated in the trouble shoot link

Serial communication is working

I just reconnected the gateway and i`m only receving "Error 03" change of VR=2 till VR=5 did not make a difference (VR=3) is normal. It looks like the gateway setting Gateway or Monitor is also no longer available and the boiler is heating like its mid winter

NOTE: OTmonitor 3.3 or 4.0 does not make a difference
NOTE2: I also reupgrade the gateway to firmware 3.4 but the issue remains (although the firmware upgrade is successful)
NOTE3: The thermostat display is blank

So you don't see any messages from the thermostat, just Error 03? Then you could try to disconnect the thermostat. With firmware 4.0.1 the gateway is supposed to start communicating with the boiler on its own. If that works, it narrows down where the problem might be.

So this definitely is a problem on the thermostat interface. The gateway seems to be picking up random noise. Especially the E55555555 reports are curious. That's quite a difficult pattern to create. Maybe your work on the staircase lighting has shifted some cables around and moved something close enough to the thermostat cable to cause interference. It doesn't look like a 50Hz interference signal though, there would only be 2 or 3 zero crossings of a 50Hz signal during the 34ms it takes to transmit an opentherm message.

Do you see a chance to connect the thermostat close to the gateway to see if it works that way? That test would tell if the problem is interference or broken hardware on the thermostat interface. Given the very low complexity of the thermostat interface, I don't expect much can go wrong there, unless there has been a big spike on the thermostat lines that blew the PIC input. Another possibility to check the thermostat interface is to run test #4 of the diagnostic firmware.

If the hardware is fine, you have to figure out/eliminate the source of the interference. Perhaps adding some capacitor over the opentherm line or passing the cable through a ferrite bead may improve the situation.

The cable is quite straight forward running vertically over the wall, The power for the staircase lights are running over the same wall but horizontally. The power has been shutdown and the issue remains. When connecting the thermostat without the gateway the thermostat seems to be doing fine. The cable used for the thermostat is a normal 2 wire in a house build in 1982 and it is not possible to replace the cable.

This evening i will connect the thermostat to the gateway directly :D

Note: One other thing is that i replaced a tablet from one corner in the room to another corner in the room but that should not be an issue. It is in both case placed 2 meter from the thermostat

I did some more testing and i`m out of ideas.

- Connected the thermostat directly to the boiler = OK
- Connected the thermostat directly to the gateway = Thermostat display does not power up
- Connected the thermostat and boiler to the gateway = Thermostats powers up and setpoint = 25 degrees
- ShortCircuit the cable in the livingroom and measure ohms in the attic 0.0.1 Ohm
- Connect the gateway to the boiler with a new cable and the thermostat in the living room with the old cable no display but thermostat seems to be reporting something
- Reset of boiler no difference
- Boiler and Thermostat connection measure around 6 volt when boiler and thermostat are connected
- After some time Error 03 pops up and after some time goes away again
- All this time the thermostat display is not working
- PowerSupply input measures 230 Volt
- Hot Water is not working

I`m out of options and the Wife is hunting me

Update: I also tested with a long new cable with foil (normaly used for PIR installation for alarm systems) and when i reset the gateway the thermostat powers-on. But when i measure the power they all look the same. Due to the placement of the cable i cannot replace it.

Any ideas left ?

Hot water is not working? The boiler doesn't need the thermostat for hot water. That should always work.

I'm not sure why you are resetting the boiler and replacing the cable there. We have established that that side is working fine. So unless you want more problems I'd leave that part alone.

It's not entirely clear to me in what configuration you captured the log, but the fact that the thermostat keeps sending the same message is suspicious. That probably means the thermostat is not receiving/understanding the opentherm transmissions from the gateway. Please measure the current on the X1 interface as described on the troubleshooting page. There may be a problem with Q2/Q3.

The thermostat may not show anything on its display until it has received some transmissions. I know for example the Honeywell Round Modulation acts like that.

Honeywell Round Modulation it is indeed

I placed a 120 Ohm resistor on X1 and measured 0.72 volt so this look ok

I also connected the thermostat to X1 using a cable of 50 cm and this is the result

Both gave an Error 03 and the strange thing is that in the beginning the log is still filled up with the following release even though the thermostat is no longer connected

Re: Possible OTG failure ?

I can't follow the reasoning behind your debugging. If no boiler is connected, there will not be any messages from the gateway to the thermostat, which is the most likely trouble spot in my opinion. So your tests are not really producing very useful data points.

The T messages are thermostat -> gateway, the R messages are gateway -> boiler (even if no boiler is connected, the gateway tries to transmit those).

It is not strange that you see R messages when no thermostat is connected. The gateway generates them per design. However, it is strange that the gateway is generating its own R messages while it is receiving T messages. It's like it failed to detect that a thermostat is connected. You should see "Thermostat connected" and "Thermostat disconnected" messages when you attach or detach the thermostat.

It still seems to me like there is a problem with the thermostat interface of the gateway. Please go through all troubleshooting checks for that interface. If those checks don't provide a clue, load the diagnostic firmware and perform the relevant diagnostic tests.

If you connect pin 3 of the IC1 socket to ground (e.g. pin 5), the current between the two terminals of X1 should be between 17mA and 23mA (1.7V and 2.3V across a 100O resistor). Deviations can be corrected by changing the value of R12. You increase the current by lowering the resistor value. Don't start manipulating R12 until the correct value of R11 has been determined (see above) because R11 influences both the low and high current values while R12 only affects the high current value.

Outcome = 2.35Volt using 120 Ohm

Re: [FIXED] Possible OTG failure ?

Post by raymonvdm »

There was one adapter which created so much disturbance for my pc speakers and wifi netwerk and also seems to have messed up the gateway. After removing the adapter (smashed in with a hammer just to release the stress) the wifi and pc speakers where fine.

The gateway issues remained until u downgrade it back to Firmware 3.4 now all issues are solved expect one minor issue with the "domestic hotwater enable" my thermostat thinks it is disabled and also seems to disable it, but this is not possible for the thermostat since it is a T87M1003. When i send a HW=1 the hot water is working again but the thermostat still thinks hot water is turned off

I tried to place my old thermostat from years ago (which has the ability to enable / disable DHW when setting temp lower than 15.5 Degrees but i cannot trick the new thermostat and gateway to enable DHW using the old one. It looks like this setting is somewhere stored in the thermostat or gateway based on the OpenTherm adress of the thermostat.

That's 19.6mA, which is perfect. (The way you copy/pasted it it looks like a 1K resistor, but the web site says 100 Ohm using a Greek letter omega: 100Ω)

The DHW enable bit (and therefor the HW command) only controls if the boiler should keep some amount of water pre-heated. Most boilers have a setting that can be set to eco, comfort, or auto. Only with the auto setting the thermostat controls if the water should be kept warm. But in any case the boiler should start heating when you open the hot water tap. I like to save energy, so mine is always off.

The gateway doesn't store this setting. Opentherm uses a point-to-point connection. There is no such thing as an "OpenTherm address". Possibly the T87M1003 and the T87M1011 share (some of) the same hardware and the interference managed to toggle the hot water button, which is just a phantom button on the T87M1003. Exposing the thermostat to interference again may toggle it back. If only you hadn't smashed that power supply ...

I`m in the process of buying a T87M1011
