if you look into the documentation of the HC450 it tells you which models work with it. Asterisk is a system that controls for instance SIP lines (voice over ip) phone lines.

If you dont have a landline, you need something, in this case i would go for phone over internet. You dont need asterisk though, it could give you more functions to play with your domotica systems but if you dont know what sip is i would leave it alone.

About video, forget it.. best thing you can do is get a mms picture from a webcam send to your phone.. but then still your too late... by the time you checked the mms, the person at the door will give up (i think)

SIP = Session Initiation Prototcol, a general accept protocol for signalling. Used in most modern telephony and Instant Messaging & Presence solutions like Microsoft Office Communication Server 2008, Asterix, etc.

Can be used to setup different kind of communications sessions (IM, Audio en Video). See:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_In ... n_Protocol

We have the analogue TipTel Doorline in use at our office. Its connected near the supplier delivery door and is connected to the PABX. It can be controlled by any phone that supports TDK (tone dialing). You can hook it up to a Asterisk server, but also to a Fritz!Box or to a cheap TipTel CyberBox and it will then be able to route doorbell calls over SIP or Skype VoIP to any destination free of charge. Just like the Gigaset HC450 it provides connectivity to a potential free switching actuator for light and home automation control.
I have looked at deploying a similar solution at home with the Gigaset HC450 but found that I could not control it through a phone connected to my Fritz!Box 7270 PABX/VoiP Gateway/DECT base station. The latter supports DECT/GAP for voice communications but to control the menu the base station needs to support the Gigaset Home Control protocol.

I was hoping and thinking of just a mic, mini camera and button and connect them to my HA/Vista server and get the server to initiate the call via skype to my cellphone. anyone thinks that there's a potential pitfall somewhere that i didnt see?

the only issue i can think of is how to get the X10 software to connect it skype. considering that my programming skills are quite rusty AND I'm on windows platform.

reason why my HA is windows, cuz it's a dual role as a MCE server also for all my MCE extenders.

That should work, the only pitfall I can see is that you didn't include a speaker. :)

I'm not a big Skype user, but as long as you can trigger an application on your PC from your X10 setup I can't see why that shouldn't work.

oh yeah. speakers. LOL totally missed that one.. good one.

hmmm I'll see what i can do with skype. not sure if i can get skype to accept external commands. the biggest software issue is with skype rather than the HA software.

Since the first generations of 3G phones now starts to fill upp the storage-space in drawers and boxes, it might be possible to hack one to do a video-call?
The first thing that used to die on them was the batteries, but that isn't needed in a wall-mount!

(On the other hand, a Gigaset HC450 is probably smaller than an old Motorola A925... :) )

LOL then we still have the speaker problem.

Ah, absolutely not!
It was a long time since speakerphones was standard on mobile phones! :)

(Or, hijack the headset and attach it to a good microhpone and speaker.)
