Suggestion: Why not use a more used forum software

Post by Noel »

I do not want to sound rude, but why is Bwired using Snitz Forum software, and not a more used free one like phpBB?
You will find lots of nice litle tweaks for phpBB!

I hate PHP :-)
I'm investigating some forums for a while, still no perfect one found that makes converting worthwhile.

So have I, but to no avail: Now have a forum-wide subscription and as a result I receive >50 emails per day in my mailbox. That would be so much of a problem if they wouldn't be mostly duplicates.

phpBB is way superior: It offers users the possibility to be notified on a new posting and/or replies since their last login. And it will notify users only once, instead of crapping up your mailbox with 50 duplicates of the same 3 emails every day.

I appreciate the service rendered, but the forum in this form is more like a mailing list. And if I have to receive an email on every posting or reply, I really prefer a mailing list because those emails contain the actual content posted so I immediately reply or discard it. I really hate that I need to open a web browser to follow a URL in order to find a meaningless three-word-answer somebody couldn't resist posting.

Personally I'm getting numbed by the amount of emails and tired of the effort required to read the postings in relation to their quality. As a result I no longer read the bigger part of them and in the long run this will cripple the forum because more people will give up.

I don't want to sound rude either or even sound ungrateful, but I consider canceling my subscription every day and that's not because I no longer enjoy the discussions or sharing the knowledge...

rss feeds need random "checkups" where as mails indicate something new..

I also used to hate PHP (I'm a Coldfusion coder), but after some time of playing with PHP, I started to like it.
I still prefer Coldfusion, but my PHP is now also not to bad, and it even got me more client projects!
