Conrad USB LAN Port (USB Server)

Post by Bwired »

They are starting to get popular.
Conrad has an USB server as well now, Only for 1 USB connection EURO 35.
So I think it's better to choose another model with more then 1 USB port.

And is it possible to connect for example a RS232 converter to it than just only a printer or harddisk.

Conrad USB LAN Port (USB Server)

The manual says that this server device connects with a wide range of USB devices.
Be ware that it's like a normal USB connection a point to point connection, so you can not share one USB device over more PC's at the same time.
To switch from one PC to another you have to agree on the first connected PC where it than gets disconnected.

The advantage is that you can place a device somewhere else on your network.
I cannot find anything in the manual about connecting an USB hub to make it possible for using more than one device at the same time.
So I guess it can't, but in my opinion the price is not bad for this device.

Just installed this device in combination with a PMIX35. The start looks good. Installed the sw, connected the device and the PMIX35, restarted HS and it was working.
Main risk is when I get a power fail. My HS server is connected to a UPS. The USB server (in the electrical cabinet) isn't. Keep you posted on the results.

Jos,
What kind of software is delivered with this device.
Windows 2003 support?
Mac Support?
Run as services?

According to the manual the system requirements are:
Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista, Windows 7
Mac OS X 10.2 or later
Device with USB connection

The software is a USB Networking USB server utility / Device setup. There's also a web-based UI.
Didn't had the time to test exact functionality an the requirements. Pick that up later this week.

Nice server, I have one, it's working nicely on a WiFi connection even.
You can even connect a USB hub to it, max 4 devices.
Connections go per device, so if you connect a printer and a hdd, you can connect the printer to one PC and the hdd to anoter if you want (not all USB servers have this functionality)

couple negatives about this thing:
- no auto-reconnect. If for whatever reason the connection is dropped, it's gone, manualy reconnect.
- If you suspend your laptop, you have to reconnect, see above
- (possibly) no software updates. Can't seem to find the manufacturer / software update site.

I have a Printer / Scanner / Copier attached to it, working from 4 PC's on it.
You can only connect 1 PC at a time though, but there are some options to disconnect another PC.
