Touchscreen based Digital Home Server - UPDATED

Post by soitjes »

Hi,

UPDATE : the software is now available for download.

I just finished my application called Digital Home Server. The Digital Home Server is a touchscreen based multimedia application. Play audio and video, make a slideshow of you photos, keep track of your appointments in google Calendar or make phonecalls with Skype, all this accessible via a 7" touchscreen.

The touchscreen is the iMo Touch 7" usb monitor.

And it's back again. I sent a complaint to that provider because they claim to do this admin review in 2-4 hours, and it has been unavaible almost all day.

I received an email that the admin review is finished, so I cross my fingers.

It's working now.

*UPDATE: I've had the chance to have a look at your website in the meantime. Nice interface you've created, I especially like the skype integration and the calendar. Too bad you had such a bad ride with trying to implement a CF drive, but from the positive side with a HD you won't have to worry about the limited read/writes that a CF card is bound to have.

Is it possible to connect the iMo to an usb extender ? I have a server in de living room, and want the screen in the bedroom ?

I was thinking of using the mobile-harddisk.nl/icy-box-iblan104-4-x ... p-790.html

No, you can't. I already tried a few things, and even an USB extension cable of 50 cm doesn't work. I looked a while ago at those USB over LAN extenders, and as far as I know they only give USB 1.1. So be careful. If you plan to buy such a thing then 1) buy it via www.dealextreme.com, which is very cheap and 2) let me know if it works.

Actually, your problems is something which is of interest to me. I've already researched many options, and currently I'm thinking of using little XP pcs. You can have those for about 100$. And I would control them from the servers. Advantage is that you can use USB in every room, and USB devices are MUCH cheaper than X10 or any other home automation solution. And since these are regular windows XP PCs I can do anything I like, since I write my own software.

Regards,

Soitjes.

@Lempens: It is possible to connect the Mimo touchscreen via a Belkin LAN USB hub (Enver tested this, see http://www.domoticaforum.eu/viewtopic.p ... =45#p15499). For a while I used a separate displaylink adapter (which is build in in the Mimo), a touchscreen with VGA interface, the Belkin LAN USB Hub and a remote server, so essentially a similar setup, and it worked allright.

I am actually going for another strategy (don't know if it will really work) : I would like to install a little PC in each room, and then connect USB devices (speakers, keyboard, light) to each of those PCs. They all communice via wireless network.

I'm now experimenting with booting XP from USB. If that works I can buy those little PCs. They are pretty cheap.

Looks nice, Only at the photoframe is it possible to remove the FormBorder after 3 secondens. And when you touch a photo it displays again, so you can close the frame.
