RFX Transmitter recommendation

Post by SolidReason »

I've just started my venture into the world of home automation. As a first step, I'm considering to buy the following RFX COM equipment :

433.92MHz receiver USB (1 port) 80002
433.92MHz transmitter USB 80005

I'm not quite sure whether I've selected right transmitter though. I'm planning to start with homeseer to manage the various KAKU devices I already have. Further down the line, I would like to switch over to a homebrew / custom build solution.

Based on the description on the RFX Com website, I should order transmitter 89002 (http://www.rfxcom.com/transmitters.htm#89002) which seems the only one compatible with the homeseer RFXCOM plug-in. But this way, I'd be locked in to homeseer and won't be able to switch over to a homebrew solution, right ?

Any recommendations on the selection for the transmitter ?

There is no diffirence in RFXCOM hardware regadarding to Homeseer.
RFXCOM has a plugin available for Homeseer, but if you are handy you write your own.
You are talking about the USB version and the link is for the LAN version.

I have been using the (wired) LAN version for 2 years now version better. Sometimes when too many USB devices are connected the power drops and the connection to the receiver is lost. The LAN version has never failed me.

Have a look at transmitter 70031. This seems to be the "older" transmitter, which should not only be usable with Homeseer and the RFXCom plug-in, but also with your own software. The RFXMitter (89031) can, as far as I know only be used with the RFXCom plug-in, Girder or xPL, not with your own software.

Thanks all for your input.

Based on this, I've updated my RFXCOM equipment list to :

433.92MHz receiver LAN (2 ports) 83003
433.92MHz RF transmitter 70031

This would provide me a (somewhat) more stable environment as well as flexibility in the location of the RFXCOM hardware.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me what the difference is between the standard transmitter and RFXmitter ? From the description on the RFXCOM site it seems that the difference is in the list of supported devices mainly.

Hmmm, should have searched a bit harder in the forum before posting. Found the answer here : http://domoticaforum.eu/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2729
