Arduino RF12 broken...?

Post by jakkes »

I attendet the workshop yesterday, great workshop!!!

Yesterday i allready had some trouble with mij Jeenode. I could not see any output with de serial monitor and the RF12demo loaded, nor could i give a command (ie 8b change from 433 to 868 Mhz).
Jean Claud had a look at the setup and could not find an error.
I decided to buy an other jeenode, witch i soldered this afternoon. This unit works great: i have output in serial monitor, and am able to switch the frequency.
ergo: the laptop setup is correct.

but now what....?
The jeenode works great on the usb, so i am able to switch some leds.

I switched the chip also: chips works great...

Could it be that the RF12 module is not working correctly?
Is the RF12 module sold seperatly?

You could first test (before buying) if all the connections to the RF12 modules are OK, with a multimeter.
Check if all the connections of the module don't have contact with each other (could be caused by too much solder for example) and you could also check if all module connections are connected to the ATMega.

PS
I don't know if the module is sold separately, but you can check here: http://jeelabs.com (catalog)

small test:

i desoldered the RF12 module from the not working jeenode.
When i then connect the jeenode to the system i am able tho change the frequency, eventhough the RF12 module is not precent.....

It seems that the RF12 module is defective.....

The RF12B is from Hope (http://www.hoperf.com/rf_fsk/rf12b.htm) and can be bought easily.

But I would email JC and see if you can buy one from him, that will be easier.

Michel.

(thx Pieter, for fixing my pw on this forum - I think...)

Whee, lots of activity.

The problem with the defective RFM12B module puzzles me. If taking it off makes the JN responsive to serial commands, then it must indeed be the problem.

Being able to change settings is not only a matter of the RFM12B, it also affects what gets stored in the ATmega's EEPROM, so it's quite possible that setting it works, even if there is no RFM12B to pick up the initialization sequence. The SPI protocol does not use handshakes.
