Siemens M20 GSM modem

Found this on Ebay:

The unit is booted by applying power to pin 4 (+) of the powerconnector for at least 1 second (1=+, 6=GND).
What I would like to know from people using the same unit is, do you leave pin 4 connected all the time, or do you use a different method?

Although most domotica-stuff is on a UPS, imagine what happens when I am not at home and there is a power-failure lasting more than half an hour (My UPS buys me about half an hour without power). The GSM modem will not boot then when power comes back.

The unit can also be interfaced to a soundcard for audio recording / playback. Did you use a specific interface to connect the M20 to a PC, or just connected it directly to the soundcard?

In the nearby future I intend to use the M20 as a means to control my domotica stuff (I definitely want to be able to switch on/off lighting, airconditiong and central heating when I am on my way home (by means of SMS or DTMF).

I know [:)], but it does not answer all my questions. Still remaining is an answer to how you feed power to the M20, in particular how you boot the modem (It needs > 1 second power on pin 4 to start working).

And the small USB interface is a nice one, had not thought of that. I will start looking for such a thing. You attached the modem directly to this tiny USB stick, or did you use any additional hardware?

No additional hardware is needed to connect the audio in and out. The USB soundcard is working great and handles the audio separate from your main system. I'm not sure what happens if there is a glitch in the power and if it will reboot automatic again, let me check that. You are right about the 1 second power on pin 4, I use that to power up the Siemens M20 GSM modem.

And you can always use voip too. I have asterisk running on linux which does the same. I have a seperate mobile phone for sms.. then again voip works under windows too.

What VOIP provider(s) are you using on your Asterisk box?
I've got Budgetphone working fine, but can not get VoipBuster (I've got two in numbers with them) to work.

i use the one that comes from xs4all. you get 2 numbers with it. plenty of examples for asterisk if needed.

Yes I have the XS4all one also, but do not use it (to expensive).
I will also be moving to a fiber optic internet account wihtin 3 months (poor me), so the XS4all Voip numbers will be gone.

I think i will be changing provider too at some point. I think i will get fiber too which leaves xs4all out the loop. I might get voipbuster or similar too but for now i'am only wurried about getting all my mail @xs4all.nl to my own domain which can move with me.
