Yesterday I have bought myself a Honeywell CM57z thermostat, just to see what's inside. Besides a Honewell NEC OEM chip, some glue logic and an I2C EEPROM, it seems to have a discrete RF-modem:

The IC is probably custom stamped as well because the markings don't ring any bell to me:

The frequency of the crystal is 13.567188 MHz, FK cut. This could generate an RF carrier frequency of 868,3(00032) MHz. Is this familiar to anybody?
Today I will try to hook it up to a spectrum analyzer. Later I will verify if the two distinct PCB traces to it carry any know of know bus signal (SPI, I2C, UART, etc).

And here's the signal on one of the two traces:

It looks like an asynchronous serial signal, but I need to measure both signals simultaneously to know for sure.
Does this look familiar to anybody? Bert?

Edit: Whoops, look at that time-base. Clearly a case of under-sampling. Time to bring out a real scope...

It's most definitely an FSK signal:

It appears that two frequencies are used. This signal is preceded by a preamble of a fixed length of the higher frequency, followed by a single period of a uniquely low frequency. After that, it's just the two frequencies as in the illustration above. If you look closely, you can see that the signal is not symmetrical which may indicate that data is transmitted on both edges.

Does it look familiar to anyone? I'm sure you have seen it before, Bert. It's quite common in RF communication...

Yes, but don't tamper with it. It's precisely tuned and if you're thinking a dish is improving your reception, you're not very likely to improve it

Sounds like you're making some progress in figuring out the CM-Zone protocol..........which is great as I'm just about to buy one for my house.

My measurements seem to have sparked some inspiration for Bert. I have sent him many more detailed measurement results and he is investigating the possibility of RFXCOM support for this system. That would be a perfect solution to this problem. But don't get your hopes up yet: We still have a long way to go.
