I am interested in getting some home automation devices but I do not know where to start. I was thinking of starting with door monitoring and some light control. What would you guys recommend as the best and most reliable system to get? For software what would you guys recommend? Homeseer? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check this forum, there is a lot of information on it. You can start with Xanura or Marmitek for controlling your devices over the powerline (X10). Homeseer is one of the better commercial software for Domotica.
