I'm about to install the Plugwise Source home edition software on a test server, but the software (to activate and install) needs an internet connection.

Problem (1). The test server does not have an internet connection. So I can not activate (and install) the software.

Problem (2)? if I install the software on a test server that does have an internet connection, will I be able to install it again (and activate) on an other "production" server when done testing?
The software will be removed from the 'test' server.

Anyone here who can confirm that reinstalling and activating (again) the software on an other PC is no problem!?

1 - About activation I'm not 100% sure..
I think you need the connection.

2- Plugwise has build in backup DB option. Backup the test server.
Install the software on the new server..
Stop the installation process when it's asking for activation.
from start menu run restore plugwise Db..
start the new server...all will work fine with the settings from your test server.

Can i install the Source a second time on another system and start all over again? For example when the first system crashes and you don't have a backup? What's the 'wisdom' behind using activation anyway?

Ok, that's fine, so no use counter on the other side cause that would be silly.

I'm sure they have more...like the USB device serial number that is connected to your key.

What do you think Chak, is only the serial number of the USB device send to Plugwise? Or also information about the number of plugs you use and how you use them?

That's against the privacy law, and if they also can collect other useful information "Power usage". Nice items to sale to the power company. i don't like that at all.

Ruud you're right, when it comes to privacy, i want to be the one in control of what information is sent to whatever. I don't mind my name sent in registration process, but nothing more. And i sure don't like guessing what more is sent!

Can't you uncheck "Allow data/statistics to be send to Plugwise" during installation of the software? I had this option during the installation of release 20081110.
Now or in the future you'll be able to login to my.plugwise.com to check your power usage.
