I've spend the weekend fooling around with a simple homebrew IR reciever. Realy simple RS232 on a breadboard (http://www.lirc.org/receivers.html). I've used a TSOP7000 because I have a Bang & Olufsen BEO4 remote lying around.

After configuring LIRC for the BEO4, I wrote a LIRC-TCP client for DomotiGa and some code so DomotiGa can send OSD-info to XBMC.
Everything works nice. I can use the BEO4 to control XBMC on my Ubuntu server and when I switch the lighting on or off I get an OSD message in XBMC.....

Nice thing about the BEO4 is that it have a dedicated light button.
So far so good..
The BEO4 uses 455KHZ and easily reaches 10 meters, so thats great. However, Being IR it won't go through a wall.
Can I just put 3 TSOP7000 in parallel?
