Any one i need some advice wat VM to use.

i'm using VM server (the free version). Only con when related to the desktopversion is that only 1 snapshot is allowed, but it is legally free. Run's quite well if you refrain from disk fragmenting on the host.

As far as I know ESX Server runs its own operating system. VMware server runs on a client Operating system. ESX server is very stable but VMware server is easier to install.

I'm using VMware server and am quit happy with the way it works. I also tried virtual box but in my opinion VMware is a better system!

Last week I converted the Homeseer machine to physical
The main reason was that I needed faster access to my nas box for the Itunes plugin.

The biggest problem in Vmware and all the other virtual OS software is slow I/O and slow network. +/- 50% slower that physical
In most application you will not notice that.

Itunes load in VM was 7 minutes on the physical machine 3 minutes


If you are using 100m network it will make no difference.
Also fast CPU machines will reduce the time.

Enver: VM technology forces you to look different to specs. Otherwise it's a disaster after implementation.

I'm using Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V.
It's running 5 VMs; XP, Windows 2003, 2 converted (linux) VMWare appliances (vmdk2vhd) and another linux VM. This setup is running without any problems for more than 1 year now on a Intel E8200 CPU with 8 GB RAM and performs very good imo.

If you run a recent Linux version on a processor with built-in virtualization support (as all recent Intel and AMD procs do), you can use KVM. It comes with the Linux kernel and can run any guest OS. Works very well.
