I'm looking for 2U rack servers (e.g. Dell 2650) with at least 2 x 2.8 Ghz. Anyone has any good pointers where these servers can be puchased cheap .....

If its for home, just go for 4u and build your own (you can use standard hardware), otherwise marktplaats.nl or similar. Unless you want a service where they replace your disks for you too

The good guys of
http://www.nowthatsit.nl have many 1U and 2U servers at reasonable prices. The PowerEdge for example:
http://www.nowthatsit.nl/categorie.asp?categorie_id=272
Prices are including VAT and you will get a VAT invoice so you can deduct it if used for your company.

Did anybody buy/own one of these Dell PowerEdge 1U servers? Can anybody give an indication of how much power they consume typically?

I once bought a Poweredge 1750 for 300 on ebay, it made so much noise I could hear it in my bedroom upstairs while the server was in the cellar with all doors closed. (Note: this was with only 1 PSU plugged in and fans spinning up to 10000RPM, when I plugged the second PSU the noise dropped a bit with fans at 6000RPM but still noisy!) The newer 1950's we have at work make much less noise.

Hm, that sounds like a good server; For in the garden shed, that is. Do you have any idea on how much power it consumes?
A 450Watt power supply means it's likely not to use much more than 200Watt, but that's already a lot for a computer. My dual PIII Xeon 550MHz with 1GB of registered ECC memory and dual redundant power supply does about 65Watt.
The laptop that's recently replaced it does about 23Watt, but it works a bit sluggish. So perhaps the power saving strategy wasn't such a good one after all so I'm rethinking my options.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_power_dissipation is a nice place to give an indication about certain usage.
