Ciao Lorenzo,

Yes it is real!
That is easy, just buy a Airnav receiver, which even comes with XML output and plot it on Googlemaps.
All the airplanes are equipped with transponders who are sending all the data continuously.
Even with a small antenna you can receive up to hundreds of kilometers, so lots of planes.

Years ago I wanted to show this realtime on Bwired but all the receivers have a delay in the XML output build in, so you can not pass it true in real-time. You can only view it in real time with the delivered program.

When I checked the site for the first time it was late in the evening and there were only 3 planes in the sky. When a new one popped up from Schiphol I wanted to check it and opened my garden door. And yes, the it was, the plane just took off. Cool stuff (I live near Schiphol)
