(Since I've learned so much lurking on this forum, I thought it's time to contribute something back)

On the z-wave alliance website, there is News that a new version (4th generation) of the z-wave chip is to be shipped to device-manufacturers in 2011:
http://www.zen-sys.com/modules/Products ... 428f4723fe

I had some contact with the sales director at QEES who was kind enough to explain to me some of the differences between the current Z-wave chip (310-series) and the new 400-serie
It has a lot of technical feature changes, which are not visible to the user in terms of functionality, but overall you can say that it is cost-optimized, has more capacity (can handle more devices) and has an encryption feature"
Cheers,
Olof

Sigma (owner of the z-wave chip) has published some more info on this upcoming Z-wave chip (4th generation).

I can't upload the PDF (apparantly to large), but you can find it here:
http://www.sigmadesigns.com/home_control_overview.php
Brochure title: 'ZM4102 brochure'

Incidently, it appears that the current Z-wave chip has a bug which impacts network reliability. Or at least according the makers of Vera 2.
