The Thirsty Lightâ„¢ is a convenient digital plant moisture sensor designed to be unobtrusive when left in the soil of a plant where it continuously monitors conditions, testing the moisture level once per second. The Thirsty Light blinks a LED light to alert the user when its time to water. With the Thirsty Lightâ„¢, you will never have to guess when your plants need watering.

Now if we could only monitor this from a pc somehow.. ;-)

You could use instead of a led a visionic water sensor perhaps? Or any of the "on/off" circuit sensors of visionic. (http://www.waakzaamwonen.nl/catalog/pro ... r-detector)

And ofcourse, you can attach some x10 device from marmitek, if you want it at the mhz you want.
