pretty funny, he made a perl script that does hcitool scan (all linux ofcourse) and shows the amounts of bluetooth devices passing his window.
Nothing to do with automation, but still funny to see how much.

Bluetooth scanning
Yes again pretty interesting

Bluetooth scanning
That could be really interesting to use as a presence detector!
Most of my family does have atleast one BT-phone that they allways carry with them.

note that a lot of phones, only respond to a bluetooth discovery command for a short time after bluetooth is manually enabled on the phone...
I assume this is to save the battery...
All my windows-ce based phones (both with and without touch screen) don't have this problem (I perform a discovery every 30 sec. so I have to wait max. 30 sec. before my front door opens when I approach my house.. but note that the phones are always plugged into their chargers when I'm inside, so I don't know what the effect on battery life is) ...
Also, I found that bt devices (e.g. headsets) that are paired, no longer respond to a bluetooth discovery

the door is only opened when I'm not already in the house and only when that single MAC address comes in-range..
2) to prevent unwanted door openings, I've currently got a hidden button on the INSIDE of the (wood/plastic) wall near the front door,
http://www.touchswitchesdirect.co.uk/
(button also works fine through double-glazing)
so in addition to the phone, I also need to touch a part of the wall to make the door open...
I plan to replace the button, with a web cam, that detects movement in front of my door, in the near future.

This camera has built in motion detector functionality.
It can FTP an image, when there is motion.
I don't need the image, I only need a girder event,
So I made a very simple ftp server in girder, with just enough functionality, so that the camera can connect without error and then executes a girder event. The image is NOT received/stored by the ftp server
of course, I know that you can do the same, with a normal X10 IR motion detector or a photocell [:D]
but those will have to be physically mounted outside. the camera I can put inside, in the window (and this is more fun anyway...)....
