Aeon Labs Z-Stick S2 and vmware

Post by soitjes »

Hi,

Did anyone ever tried to use the Aeon Labs Z-Stick S2 on windows 7 on a virtual machine (in my case vmware) ?

After installing the driver I plug in the stick, which I see in the device list, but with an error sign. In the device properties I see : Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) But I just downloaded the driver from the Aeon Labs website.

Any idea ?

Thanks,

Soitjes.

Hi Soitjes.

I have tried it with Windows 7 and Virtual PC.

The host PC has the driver.

The driver makes a COM port on the host.

Found the COM port in Manage - Device Manager.

In Virtual PC settings I set up COM 1 to that physical COM port. (In my setup COM 5)

Works fine.

In my case (vmware) I can't get it to work. I did like you, and only left the driver on the host. On the host it works fine, and I see the serial port in the device list (com3).

In the vmware settings I create a virtual serial port which I map on the physical port com3, but it never appears in the device list.

I tried all sorts of combinations, but the outcome is always that the serial does not show up in the device list on the guest.

I'm using vmware player. It has serial port and usb support, so it should work.

Late reply - for the records.

Works just fine on VMWare Fusion on OSX (host) running Vista or Win7.
On connecting the z-stick to OSX VMWare connects the USB to the VM. Vista or Win7 has the COM driver installed making the COM ports available in Win7/Vista.

Works fine here with vmware server, only what i do notice is that sometimes the stick will stop blinking (this happens maybe every 3 months or so)
I have to remove the stick manually and put it back in, and it will start to blink and work again (cant restart something software based to fix this)

The new ESXi 5.0 hypervisor now has USB support.

I am running 2 ESXi machines with several VMs using USB printers, and one VM specifically has the Plugwise and CM13A USB devices assigned.

Works without any issues.

I use the same setup (also ESXi 5) several interfaces connected (USB)
Works fine, however when you unplug the z-stick you might see problems and have to disconnect/reconnect the stick.
