Oregon Scientific WTGR800 - solar powered

Post by sgtbean »

At the moment my WTGR800 sensor is setup on a make-shift mast in the backyard. Since the backyard is sheltered from the worst of the weather coming from anywhere between 230 and 50 degrees, the readings are affected regularly. It has always been my intention to move the sensor unit onto the roof of the house, but the main hurdle is access. I don't want to be climbing up onto the roof every year to replace the batteries on the unit.

So one of the alternatives I came up with is to power the unit from a battery charged by a small solar panel. I have found a set at Conrad that I believe can be used for just this purpose, but my knowledge of electronics is not sufficient to start kitbashing without consulting some more knowledgable people first :D
Here's the Conrad set:

If I loose the light and connect it to the WTGR800 instead, it should give me the setup needed to have it powered by solar charged battery. I can then place the battery in my attic to have it easily accessible for maintenance.

Again, that's how it would function according to me, but before I start kitbashing I would like to ask the experts what they think of this?? All comments, suggestions, alternatives are welcome!

Always test links before you post them from the preview...
And Conrad has such a nice "direct productlink" button on every product page... use it or you won't get any answer at all :)
