MCT-302T external contact and dipswitch

Bit confused. The manual stated that if you don't use the external contact you need to set SW2 to off AND you have to short the contact. I just read it later and even without the short the sensor seems to work fine?
Does anyone know why you have to short the connection if you don't use it and what would be the disadvantage will be if the contact stays open and SW2 set to off?
