Nuon adding P1 soon to e-manager?

Nuon recently added the option "Slimme meter (P1)" to the install-time question "Type elektriciteitsmeter".
I have a smart meter with P1 port and would love to try it, perhaps even use it in a research project into home energy savings I am involved in.
Who can tell me more? What hardware is used? Would a FTDI 5V converter cable work? Or is the P1 port reader wirelessly connected to the e-manager gateway via Z-wave/Zigbee?
