The RFXtrx433 is a totally new design with:
- flash memory to enable user upgradable firmware and support for more protocols,
- easy to use interface protocol described in the free available SDK,
- transceiver instead of a separate receiver and transmitter.
The RFXtrx433 can be connected to a LAN_USB hub for example Belkin or Silex or use a Linux system with socat.

The firmware in the RFXLAN receiver and transmitter has proven to be very stable and it is not expected that updates are necessary. The RFXLAN receiver sensitivity is greater compared to the RFXtrx433.
The RFXtrx433 has a few more protocols but not all can be activated the same time, see the RFXtrx User Guide.
For users that need support of Blyss (France) or LightwaveRF (UK) they need the RFXtrx433.
Users in other countries have no direct need for the RFXtrx433 and can select the RFXLAN because only some additional weather sensors are supported but these are not as good as Oregon sensors supported by the RFXLAN.
The RFXLAN can be flashed with xPL firmware and run as a freestanding xPL controller using less than 1 Watt.
