OTMonitor - does it need OTGW?

I hope that this very basic question will be forgiven.

The opening sentence on the OT Monitor at http://otgw.tclcode.com/otmonitor.html says
"The Opentherm Monitor is a small utility that is intended to help you configure and monitor your opentherm gateway."

Does this mean that the OTGW is essential for the OTM to operate?

I have put the OTM onto Ubuntu and it opens up nicely but obviously doesn't monitor anything yet.
If I were to buy the necessary TTL to USB cable and add the rJ 9 connector can I simply plug it into my Remeha Avanta and monitor the data exchanges between it and my thermostat?
Note that, at present, I do not want to send any data to the boiler. I just need to see and record the data flow.

Many thanks

The RJ9 connector on the boilet is for the Remeha own configuration software and is not a OTGW port. You need an OTGW board from that website.

Thanks vasco for the reply.
I shall get the OTGW kit as it is not clear to me that the Recom software provides the level of detail available from the OTGW.
